Understanding Respite Care: A Short-Term Option for Families Who Need a Break

Most families think of assisted living as an all-or-nothing decision. Either a parent moves in permanently, or they stay at home. There’s a middle option many families don’t know exists until they need it: a short-term stay.

What Respite Care Actually Is

A respite stay is a short-term visit to an assisted living community, anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, at the same standard of care a permanent Resident receives. It isn’t a trial run with fewer services or a “lite” version of the experience. It’s the same private suite, the same meals, the same daily rhythm, just for a defined period of time.

Who Uses Short-Term Stays

Families use respite care for more reasons than people expect. A primary caregiver having surgery or taking a long-planned trip. A parent recovering from a hospital stay who isn’t quite ready to return home alone, but doesn’t need a permanent move either. A family testing whether a community, and the idea of assisted living itself, actually fits before committing to something bigger. Because we’re home to a maximum of 16 Residents in Eagle, we regularly hear from families across the Treasure Valley, including Boise’s North End (83703), who didn’t know a short-term option existed until they asked.

What a Respite Stay Actually Looks Like

There’s no separate “respite wing” or reduced version of daily life. A Resident staying for two weeks eats the same meals, joins the same activities, and receives the same personal care as someone who’s lived here for two years. The goal is for it to feel like a genuine stay, not a waiting room.

Why This Option Matters More Than Families Realize

Caregivers often wait for a crisis-sized reason before asking for help, as though needing a break has to be earned through exhaustion first. Respite care exists precisely so that doesn’t have to be true. It’s a normal, non-drastic option, and using it doesn’t mean a family has failed at caregiving. It often means the opposite: they’re planning ahead instead of waiting to break down.

Questions to Ask About Short-Term Stays

  • What’s included in a respite stay, and does anything cost extra compared to a permanent suite?
  • How much notice is typically needed to book one?
  • Can a respite stay convert into a permanent move if it turns out to be the right fit?
  • How do you help a Resident (and family) transition smoothly for such a short stay?
